Coventry shuts out Spartans

Posted Monday, October 20, 2008 by Coach Egan

For two teams that have shown recent offensive improvements, the last thing anyone expected is a defensive stranglehold.

Such was the case Friday, as Coventry improved to (3-6, 3-3 PTC), defeating Springfield 18-0.
The Spartans (0-9, 0-6) and Comets combined for only six points and 104 total offensive yards in the first half.

Aided by good field position and an unsportsmanlike penalty, Coventry scored with five minutes to play in the first half.

The Comets took possession of an out of bounds punt on the Spartans’ 49. Beau Cross carried 13 yards from the Comets’ 35, and Coventry moved to Springfield’s 11 with the penalty.

Coventry’s Ethan Wichterman took over from there, carrying four times before Comets quarterback Jeff Kuykendall faked to Wichterman, dropped back and found Brandon Burns in the end zone, his defender having slipped to the ground.

The Comets’ PAT attempt was bobbled on the snap and unsuccessful, but that turned out to be all the points Coventry would need, as they proceeded to hold the Spartans to 66 total yards in the game.

The Spartans only earned one first down in the first half, moving to Coventry’s 34-yard line when quarterback Scotty Cole took the snap, turned left, spun around and found junior Jonathan Hofer, who sped down Springfield’s sideline for an 18 yard gain. An incomplete pass and two sacks later, and the Spartans were forced to punt away.

The second half was even worse for the Spartans, who switched senior Alex Pitingoro to quarterback much of the half. Pitingoro’s inexperience in the position was sometimes noticeable, as slow-developing handoffs resulted several times in a loss of yards.

“(Cole) didn’t feel too good at halftime,” Springfield coach Kevin Vaughn said. “That put us in a position where we were inexperienced, and we had some frustrations.”

Those frustrations seemed to spawn from a team that kept themselves in the game for the most part, but gave up a few opportunities that significantly cost them.

Springfield’s Joe O’Neil opened the second half by returning the kickoff down the Spartans’ sideline to Coventry’s 26. A touchdown and extra point in the short field would put the Spartans ahead. Instead, they went four-and-out, losing eight total yards on the drive.

Not to take anything away from Coventry’s defense, which did a phenomenal job of shutting down the Spartans all night.

“We managed the game a lot better than we have recently,” Coventry coach Jay Newcome said. “(Offensively) we had a couple long distance plays, but for the most part we stayed out of them.”
That was aided mainly by the play of freshman quarterback Jeff Kuykendall, who threw three touchdown passes and finished 10-of-19 for 192 yards.

Perhaps his best touchdown pass was a 70-yarder to Jeff Walker. Kuykendall threw just over the head of Scotty Cole, who leapt toward the ball with hands in the air. Walker grabbed the pass and tore down Coventry’s sideline, staying in bounds despite shoves from Springfield’s Carlos Greco and Dustin Moneypenny.

“He doesn’t take sacks often,” Newcome said of Kuykendall. “He’s good about getting away from people.”

Kuykendall did so in the Comets’ final score, avoiding pressure to pass a four yard touchdown to Wichterman when facing 4th and goal.
