Comets win rivalry with Norton

Posted Sunday, September 28, 2008 by Coach Egan

Welcome back Brandon!

Coventry junior quarterback Brandon Burns, seeing his first action since week one against Trinity, threw two touchdown passes and the Comets improved to 2-1 in the Portage Trail Metro Division with a 14-6 win at their rival Norton’s home.

Sidelined for four games after suffering a concussion, Burns tossed an 84-yard scoring strike to senior Billy Johnson and a 13-yard touchdown pass to senior Jeff Walker.

“We’ve had more than our share of injuries,” Coventry coach Jay Newcome said last week. “But the Comets have maintained a positive attitude and continued to work hard, according to their coach.

Coventry bouned back nicely after suffering their worst defeated in recent history when they lost to Kent Roosevelt. Seeing a rival the week following got the Comets back on track.

Norton (1-5, 1-2) was coming off its first win of the season over Springfield, but the Comets limited the Panthers to 139 yards of total offense.

The Panthers completed just 2-of-12 passes for 5 yards.

League leader Ravenna had needed a late touchdown to top Norton in week four’s match-up.
Burns connected on 7-of-16 throws for 140 yards. His fourth-quarter TD toss to Walker gave Coventry (2-4, 2-1) a 14-6 lead.

Newcome’s team accumulated 11 first downs and 286 total yards.

Several other Comets have missed multiple games, including senior running back Justin White (broken arm) and senior tight end-linebacker Ethan Wichterman (knee injury).

Coventry will look to stay near the top of the PTC standings as they host Southeast (1-5, 1-2 PTC) on Friday at 7 p.m.
