Comets taken for a rough ride

Posted Monday, September 22, 2008 by Coach Egan

KENT  Forget about it and move on.

That might be the best solution for Coventry after being treated like an unwelcome guest by Kent Roosevelt in a 41-6 loss Friday night.

After coming out with fire and passion the week before which led to a 28-26 victory over Crestwood, Coventry (1-4, 1-1 PTC) looked lethargic as they stepped onto the field.

Coventry went three-and-out quickly to start the game, then Kent Roosevelt (3-2, 2-0 PTC) took over and wasted no time. On the first play from scrimmage, Rough Rider quarterback Evan Shimensky found a receiver Jacob Miller all alone down the sidelines for a 45-yard touchdown pass.

“We didn’t come out and play well from the first snap,” Coventry coach Jay Newcome said.

“Missed tackles, missed blocks, lots of mistakes which was uncharacteristic of us in past weeks.”

Late in the first quarter, running back Aaron Riley went 27 yards to set up Shimensky for a 12-yard sneak to make it 14-0 Roosevelt.

After Coventry failed to convert on a fourth and one, Riley struck again with a 36 yard run on the first play of the drive for the third touchdown of the half. He would finish with 62 yards in the game.

Shimensky spent most of the first half terrorizing the Comet defense. When he wasn’t handing off to his backs for big runs, he was connecting with one of five different receivers to march up and down the field. He would punch in a second touchdown himself and throw a second touchdown in the second quarter.

Shimensky finished 10-of-13 for 169 yards, two touchdowns to go with 31 yards and two more touchdowns rushing.

Coventry’s lone successful drive came at the end of the first half down 34-0. Between runs by Jeff Walker and Richard Geiger, plus a pass interference penalty set the Comets up on the Roosevelt 26-yard line. Walker threw three incompletions, but on fourth down with less than 15 seconds to go, he found Billy Johnson in the end zone for a touchdown. The point after was blocked, but it got Coventry on the board at 34-6.

“We went in thinking we had a good game plan,” Newcome said. “At times, we moved the ball, but we had penalties in key possessions.”

Besides the touchdown, Walker finished with 75 yards rushing.

Rough Riders fans enjoyed one more touchdown early in the third quarter, then both teams slowly but surely started putting out the reserves for the rest of the game.

Coventry freshman quarterback Jeff Kuykendall, who did not play last week because of an injured hand, did get some time in the fourth quarter to try and get the rust off and play with the first team again.

One thing to look forward to next week is the possible return of Brandon Burns, the quarterback at the beginning of the season who suffered a concussion.

“We’ll have Brandon back hopefully,” he said. “We’ll try to ease him in, we want him to take it easy the first couple of days.”

Burns and the Comets will travel to Norton to take on the Panthers. It will be a good test in a rivalry game to see if Coventry can bounce back after Roosevelt.

“Norton will be fired up after a win (tonight),” Newcome said. “It’s a big rivalry for us. They came and beat us 10-7 last year, hopefully we can return the favor.”

Focusing on the Panthers and forgetting the Rough Riders can only help the Comets.
